Wu Chung Hang | Since Yan Ling Tang
In 1837, the seventeenth year of the Qing emperor Daoguang, the Wu family crossed the strait from Fujian to Tainan, Taiwan’s old capital, and settled under the ancestral hall name Yan Ling Tang.
In the Japanese colonial era, the Nishimura Trading Company kept houses in five cities, Keelung, Taipei, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung, dealing in fine provisions: mullet roe, sake, milk powder, dried delicacies, and tea. In 1945, as Japanese rule ended, the five houses passed jointly to their five managers and took a new name, Wu Chung Hang. Here, Wu is 伍, the formal character for five. The manager in Tainan was Wu Tung-Liang, fourth generation of Yan Ling Tang.
For decades, Wu Chung Hang was where Taiwanese families came for the finest provisions of the Lunar New Year.
Tea was always on its shelves. When Wu Chieh-Hsi, the sixth generation of Wu Chung Hang, took over the house, tea rose from one provision among many to the heart of the brand: aged teas from across the past century, Taiwan’s oolongs of every roast, and Pu-erh.
Through the Qing, Japanese rule and the decades since, the family has kept its name, its hall and its roots in Tainan. Today, Centennial Wu Chung still offers the aged soy sauce of its provisions tradition, true to a house built on fine food.
